Kenya Safari Itineraries Featuring Masai Mara
How we usually build 5-night, 6-night, 7-night and longer Kenya safaris around Naivasha, Nakuru and a proper three-night Masai Mara stay — and when Amboseli, Ol Pejeta, Samburu, Tsavo or Diani change the route.
Start with the journey guests have already made
For many of our India departures, guests land in Nairobi after an overnight flight from Mumbai that is roughly six and a half hours in the air. By the time immigration, bags and the airport exit are done, they have already spent most of the night travelling.
That is one reason our standard Kenya routing usually begins with Lake Naivasha rather than sending guests straight into another long road transfer to the Masai Mara.
Naivasha is roughly an hour and a half from Nairobi under normal conditions. It gives the first day a softer landing: a manageable road sector, time for lunch and check-in, and still enough day left for the lake boat ride or other planned activity.
1N Naivasha → 1N Nakuru → 3N Masai Mara. We use this route often because it combines a sensible arrival day with two different Rift Valley experiences and still protects three consecutive nights in the Mara.

5 Nights / 6 Days — our standard Kenya circuit
Naivasha 1N → Nakuru 1N → Masai Mara 3N
Day 1 · Nairobi to Naivasha
Arrive in Nairobi and transfer to Naivasha. Because the first road sector is relatively short, guests are not asked to follow an overnight international journey with another five- or six-hour drive. Depending on arrival timing, the afternoon can include the Lake Naivasha boat ride and Crescent Island or simply a more relaxed start.
Day 2 · Naivasha to Nakuru
After breakfast, continue to Lake Nakuru. This keeps the road day manageable and adds a very different ecosystem, with rhino, buffalo, giraffe and strong birdlife among the key draws. The exact game-drive structure depends on arrival time and where the selected lodge is located.
Day 3 · Nakuru to Masai Mara
Leave Nakuru after breakfast and drive to the Mara. The useful arrival window depends on road conditions, the gate used and the lodge location. Where timing allows, we finish the day with an afternoon game drive.
Days 4 & 5 · Full Mara safari days
These are the two days we protect. Full-day drives with picnic lunch work well for guests who want maximum field time; split drives can suit some families, lodge locations and slower itineraries. Migration season, photography priorities and current wildlife movement all influence the plan.
Day 6: depart the Mara for Nairobi or use a bush flight where the itinerary, budget and onward connection make that worthwhile.
Two nights often leaves only one complete Mara day after the drive in. Three nights normally gives an arrival-day opportunity plus two uninterrupted wildlife days, which is a much stronger balance for a first Kenya safari.
6 Nights / 7 Days — add Nairobi when the flight timing calls for it
A common six-night version keeps the same wildlife core and adds one Nairobi night:
Naivasha 1N → Nakuru 1N → Mara 3N → Nairobi 1N.
This is particularly useful for guests with an early international flight the following morning. Rather than ending a safari with a long Mara-to-Nairobi road transfer immediately before departure, the Nairobi night gives a clean buffer and a much less stressful final day.
Depending on arrival and departure timings, Nairobi can also be placed at the beginning. We do not add it merely to make the itinerary look longer; it should solve a timing, comfort or sightseeing requirement.
What changes when Amboseli is included?
Amboseli cannot be treated like a small detour from the standard lakes-and-Mara circuit. It changes the geography of the entire trip.
Our normal approach is to put Amboseli or the Mara at one end of the itinerary, use Naivasha and/or Nakuru through the middle, and finish at the other major safari destination.
Option A · Amboseli first
Amboseli → Naivasha → Nakuru → Mara. This works when we want to begin in southern Kenya and gradually work toward the Rift Valley before finishing with the longest Mara stay.
Option B · Mara first
Mara → Nakuru / Naivasha → Amboseli. This can be better when international flight timing, lodge availability or the rest of the holiday makes a Mara-first sequence more efficient.
The Naivasha → Amboseli transfer
Naivasha to Amboseli is roughly a seven-hour road sector depending on traffic and conditions. It is possible, and we do use it when the total itinerary justifies it. But it consumes a large part of the day, so the rest of the safari should be built around that reality rather than pretending it is a light transfer.
When budget and holiday length allow, adding one more night is often better than trying to squeeze Amboseli into a six-night itinerary simply because six nights sounds convenient.
7 Nights / 8 Days — the better-paced Amboseli version
A strong seven-night route is:
Amboseli 2N → Naivasha 1N → Nakuru 1N → Mara 3N
or the same route in reverse.
Two nights gives Amboseli enough time to be a genuine safari destination rather than a one-night photo stop. Guests can experience its elephant herds, open landscapes and Kilimanjaro views when conditions cooperate, while still retaining the three-night Mara core.
The exact direction should be decided around arrival and departure flights, lodge availability, road sectors and whether a beach extension follows.
Longer custom safaris: when we add other regions
Once the trip moves beyond seven nights, we stop thinking in terms of a fixed circuit and build around the traveller’s wildlife priorities.
Ol Pejeta
Useful for guests who want a conservation-focused stop and a different northern Kenya experience. It pairs naturally with routes that continue through the Rift Valley and Mara.
Samburu
Samburu gives the trip a genuinely different landscape and wildlife mix. Because it sits well north of Nairobi, it should be part of a logical northern circuit rather than added randomly between southern parks.
Tsavo
Tsavo becomes especially useful when the safari is moving toward the Kenyan coast. In the right itinerary it can create a logical bridge between wildlife and beach rather than forcing guests back through Nairobi.
Extra Mara nights
Sometimes the best use of an additional night is simply more Mara. This is particularly true for photographers, migration-focused travellers and guests who value wildlife time more than collecting destinations.
A longer example might be Samburu → Ol Pejeta → Naivasha / Nakuru → Mara, but the exact number of nights should follow what the guest actually wants from the safari.
Diani as a post-safari extension
Diani is one of the most common add-ons guests ask us for, and it usually works best after the safari.
After several early starts, game drives and road sectors, three or four nights on the coast gives the trip a completely different finish. The best connection depends on where the safari ends and which domestic flights are operating on the travel dates.
What we generally avoid is weakening the core wildlife itinerary just to squeeze one or two beach nights into an already short trip.
Why we sometimes reverse the route
Naivasha first is our standard starting point for many India itineraries, but it is not a rigid rule. We reverse the circuit whenever the whole journey works better that way.
Flight timings
Early arrivals, late departures and morning international flights can all change where Nairobi fits and which end of the safari should come first.
Amboseli or another distant park
Once Amboseli, Samburu or Tsavo is added, the route must be redesigned around Kenya’s geography rather than the original five-night template.
Bush flights
A fly-in or fly-out sector can remove a long road day, but it changes baggage handling, airport logistics and sometimes the safari vehicle arrangement.
Lodge availability
In peak periods, the right lodge may only be available in one sequence. We would rather reverse a sensible route than force a weaker accommodation choice purely to preserve a template.
What we try not to do
Too many one-night stops
Changing hotels every day makes a safari look busy on paper but can turn the holiday into a luggage-and-road exercise.
Count transfer days as safari days
A seven-hour road sector is a seven-hour road sector. We plan around it rather than disguising it as a full sightseeing day.
Add parks just for the name
More destinations are not automatically a better safari. We protect useful game-drive time before destination count.
Cut the Mara too aggressively
If the Mara is the main reason for travelling to Kenya, we prefer to protect three nights before adding secondary stops.
Our working framework
6 nights: usually add Nairobi for flight practicality, or redesign the route if Amboseli is a priority.
7 nights: enough space to include Amboseli properly while retaining the three-night Mara core.
8 nights and beyond: start considering Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Tsavo, extra Mara nights or other combinations based on wildlife priorities.
Safari + beach: add Diani after the safari rather than weakening the wildlife portion.
The itinerary should follow the traveller, the geography and the wildlife priorities — not a fixed brochure sequence.
Frequently asked questions
Why do you usually put Naivasha before the Mara?
For many guests arriving from India, it creates a much easier first road day after an overnight international flight. Naivasha is also a worthwhile destination in its own right and fits naturally before Nakuru and the Mara.
Is three nights in the Masai Mara enough?
For a standard first Kenya safari, three nights gives a strong balance of price and wildlife time. Guests wanting a more wildlife-heavy or photography-led trip can extend to four or more.
Can Amboseli fit into six nights?
Yes, but it changes the routing and can create a long transfer such as Naivasha to Amboseli. We often recommend an extra night when the goal is to include Amboseli without compressing the rest of the safari.
Should the Mara be first or last?
Either can work. For our standard five-night route we usually finish in the Mara, but flight timings, Amboseli, other parks, lodge availability or a beach extension can make a reversed route better.
How many nights should I add for Diani?
Three to four nights usually gives the beach extension enough time to feel worthwhile after the safari. The exact connection depends on where the safari ends and the available domestic flights.
