For Indian travellers, the Masai Mara is more straightforward than it first appears. Mumbai has direct Nairobi connections, English is widely used in tourism, and the main safari circuit is well established.
Where trips go wrong is usually in the detail: a badly timed return flight, the wrong lodge location, a food requirement mentioned too late, too few nights in the Mara or a quote that hides the actual Reserve and vehicle costs.
Start with the safari structure, not the airfare.
A cheap flight can still produce an expensive trip if it forces an extra Nairobi night or costs you a full safari day.

Best gateway
Nairobi. Most Indian travellers route through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and continue to the Mara by road or via Wilson Airport.
Direct flights
From Mumbai, both IndiGo and Kenya Airways operate direct Nairobi services. Timings matter as much as fare.
Kenya entry
Ordinary Indian passport holders should obtain Kenya’s electronic travel authorisation before travel.
Good Mara duration
3 nights minimum for most first trips; 4 nights is materially better if wildlife is the main purpose.
Food
Vegetarian food is manageable at most established lodges. Jain and strict Indian meal requirements should be confirmed before travel.

Flights from India: keep this part simple
For Mumbai-based travellers, the easiest comparison is usually IndiGo versus Kenya Airways on the direct Mumbai–Nairobi route.
IndiGo can work very well on price and has recently been the more punctual option. Kenya Airways can be more useful when its later Nairobi–Mumbai return timings allow you to preserve more of the final safari day.

Kenya eTA for Indian passport holders
Standard eTA
The official Kenya eTA portal currently lists the standard single-entry eTA at USD 30. Each traveller needs their own approved authorisation.
Do not leave it to the last minute
Kenya’s immigration service says applications are usually processed within about three days but recommends applying at least two weeks before travel.
Typical requirements include a passport valid for at least six months, a photo/selfie, itinerary details and accommodation confirmation.
Nairobi: do you need a hotel night?
Sometimes yes — and this is one of the most overlooked India-specific planning issues.
Arrival day
If your international flight lands early enough, a same-day road transfer or Wilson connection may be possible. If it lands late, forcing the Mara transfer can create a poor first day.
Return day
An early-morning Nairobi–Mumbai departure can make a final Nairobi night practically compulsory even if the airfare looks attractive.

Drive or fly from Nairobi?
Road is usually cheaper and works well when you have enough time or when the Mara is part of a broader Kenya circuit.
Flying is much more attractive when the safari is short, when comfort matters, or when losing most of a day to road transfers would undermine the trip.
Food: the part Indian families worry about most
Most established safari lodges can handle standard vegetarian diets. The bigger issue is precision.
- If you do not eat eggs, say so.
- If you need Jain food, specify no onion, no garlic and any root-vegetable restrictions clearly.
- If separate utensils or preparation matter, ask for that specifically.
- If children need simple Indian food, confirm it before the safari starts.
- Remember that packed lunches on full-day game drives need the same dietary instructions as lodge meals.
Indian-owned, Indian-connected and India-friendly lodges
These are three different things. We would not choose a safari lodge only because of ownership, but for some Indian families the kitchen culture and familiarity with dietary requirements can materially improve the trip.

How many nights should an India-origin trip actually have?
3 nights Mara
Works for a compact trip, but every transfer and flight timing needs to be efficient.
4 nights Mara
Our preferred shape for a wildlife-first trip because it gives you more complete game-drive time and less pressure to chase sightings.
5–7 nights Kenya
Allows the Mara to be combined sensibly with Naivasha, Lake Nakuru, Amboseli or another wildlife area without turning the itinerary into constant driving.

Compact wildlife-first trip
Night 1 Nairobi if required by flight timing → 3 or 4 nights Masai Mara → Nairobi departure.
Best when the Mara itself is the reason for travelling.
Broader Kenya trip
Nairobi → Naivasha / Nakuru → Masai Mara, or combine the Mara with Amboseli depending on total nights and priorities.
Do not add destinations simply to make the itinerary look longer.
Every additional park costs transfer time. Protect enough full safari days in the Mara.
